A squared unit measures surface and a cubed unit measures space. Changing feet to inches changes a length factor by 12, an area factor by 144, and a volume factor by 1,728. This is why a simple-looking unit mismatch can create a large ordering error.

COMMON MISTAKES

Avoid preventable errors.

  • Entering a value in a unit different from the field label is the most common avoidable error. Convert first or choose the matching unit option when one is available.
  • Confusing net and gross, plan area and sloped area, nominal and actual size, or pixels and physical length changes the question being answered. Name the quantity before calculating it.
  • Using a default as if it were a recommendation can mislead. Defaults illustrate the fields; replace them with measurements, product data, or terms that apply to the actual situation.
  • Treating a rounded display as an exact whole-unit order can leave too little material or overstate precision. Check packaging and round according to the item being bought.
