How the calculation works.
Gross = net × (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100); net = gross ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)- net = price before VAT

Adding 20% VAT
A net price of 100 at 20% becomes 120 gross. The VAT amount is 20. Removing 20% from a gross 120 returns 100, not 96, because removal uses division rather than subtraction.
Build a dependable estimate.
- Measure or obtain a price and the applicable VAT rate from one consistent source. Do not combine an estimate from a plan with an unrelated finished measurement without checking the reference points.
- Enter the values exactly as the field labels request, then read both the main result and any supporting detail. In add mode the entered price is treated as net; in remove mode it is treated as gross and divided by one plus the rate.
- Repeat the calculation for separate sections when a project has different depths, sizes, rates, or conditions. Add compatible results only after confirming that they describe the same thing.

Keep measurements compatible.
The rate is a percent. Money is displayed in the selected currency. Changing that selection changes denomination and formatting only; it is not foreign-exchange conversion.
Use one unit system within a single measurement path. Metric work commonly records millimetres, centimetres, metres, square metres, cubic metres, litres, kilograms, and tonnes; imperial work commonly uses inches, feet, square feet, cubic feet, cubic yards, gallons, pounds, and US tons. Convert deliberately rather than treating similarly named units as interchangeable.
A squared unit measures surface and a cubed unit measures space. Changing feet to inches changes a length factor by 12, an area factor by 144, and a volume factor by 1,728. This is why a simple-looking unit mismatch can create a large ordering error.
Supplier terminology deserves a check. A “yard” may mean a cubic yard in bulk-material sales, while a linear yard means length in another context. A gallon can be US or imperial. Read the quote and package label before comparing quantities.

Avoid preventable errors.
- Entering a value in a unit different from the field label is the most common avoidable error. Convert first or choose the matching unit option when one is available.
- Confusing net and gross, plan area and sloped area, nominal and actual size, or pixels and physical length changes the question being answered. Name the quantity before calculating it.
- Using a default as if it were a recommendation can mislead. Defaults illustrate the fields; replace them with measurements, product data, or terms that apply to the actual situation.
- Treating a rounded display as an exact whole-unit order can leave too little material or overstate precision. Check packaging and round according to the item being bought.
Check unusual inputs carefully.
A zero input can be mathematically valid in some fields but may make the result unhelpful; a zero divisor is not valid. Review an unexpectedly zero or unusually large answer before acting on it.
Very small dimensions, rates, or resolutions can be dominated by display rounding. Very large values can reveal a typo in a unit, decimal point, or count.
Irregular shapes, changing rates, partial periods, tapered depths, openings, overlaps, and mixed products often need separate calculations rather than one average input.
