A consistent word-counting rule for everyday writing.
FigureNest counts sequences of Unicode letters or numbers as words and keeps common apostrophes and hyphens inside the same token. That means a contraction such as “don’t” and a compound such as “well-written” are normally counted as one word each. This is useful for essays, articles, speeches, social posts, applications, reports and other everyday writing.
Different editors can disagree on unusual punctuation, symbols, URLs, emoji, or specialist notation because there is no single universal definition of a “word” for every writing system and document type. If a school, publisher, competition or platform has an official counting method, use that method for the final submitted total.
Character count with and without whitespace.
The Characters result counts Unicode code points in the text, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks. The Without spaces result removes whitespace first. These counts are useful for text fields and platform limits, but some systems count underlying UTF-16 units, grapheme clusters, markup or encoded bytes instead, so emoji and combined characters can produce a different total on another service.
Simple planning estimates, not exact timers.
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a slower pace intended to be more useful for presentations and conversational delivery. These rates are planning assumptions rather than measurements. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary, language, pauses, emphasis, questions and audience interaction can change the real time substantially.

How the structural counts are estimated.
Sentence count uses sentence-ending punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks, with an unpunctuated non-empty passage treated as one sentence. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Abbreviations, initials, decimal numbers and unusual punctuation can make sentence boundaries ambiguous, so this is a practical heuristic rather than a grammar parser.
Your text does not need a FigureNest counting server.
The text analysis runs in the browser. FigureNest does not require an account or upload the entered text to a word-count API. Standard site assets, consent-controlled analytics and advertising requests can still occur according to the site privacy settings, but the text itself is not required as a calculation payload.
